ALIEN: ISOLATION

headerAlien: Isolation was released October 5, 2014 by Sega. The game was developed by the Creative Assembly.  Alien: Isolation is a first person stealth survival shooter.

For any Alien fan, for any survival horror connoisseur, this game comes closer to the original film than other releases. Unlike other releases, this time around there is only one alien which cannot be killed. This makes the game more of a survival action game.

The game developers had to look closely at the sets and designs used in the 1979 film. The idea was to give the game world the same look as the old film. The game completely nails the atmosphere of the film, and takes it all in its stride.

As Amanda, you will navigate through an increasingly volatile world as you find yourself confronted on all sides by a panicked, desperate population and an unpredictable, ruthless alien. Amanda, who is investigating the disappearance of her mother Ellen Ripley, was transferred to the space station Sevastopol to find the flight recorder of Nostromo. However, an alien has already infested the station.

The AI in the game allows the alien to hunt by sound, smell or vision. The alien can sometimes spend three or four minutes searching the room you’re hiding in and leaving you no chance to get away before it leaves, and other times it may just drop out of a vent right in front of you and leave you no chance to escape.

The player has the ability to peer around object not unlike the popular Thief. The player has the ability to run, but this increases the noise that they make and thus the chance of the Alien finding them.

The player has a flashlight and a motion tracker but using them can bring the alien towards them due to the sounds. The player can open lockers and even hide in them.

Although the game features some weapons, they will be effective only against the human occupants and android “Working Joes”.

The player can make weapons from things found around the maps. The locations are randomized so it’s not possible to memorize the locations. Players will also encounter computers and other devices that they can hack to access information or trigger in-game actions, using a system which is similar to video tape tracking.

The game has some crafting with the things found. For example. a health kit.

Generally the game is not scripted, the player can find multiple exits and paths through a given room. Alien Isolation is maybe 14-20 hours depending on skill and difficulty which is a lot better than several of the earlier iterations.

The idea of hide and seek from the alien for 20 hours over and over is far from the game experience. There is much to explore and while finding the way out of each room there are things to find.

Key mapping options in-game:

  1.  Revolver
  2.  Shotgun
  3.  Flamethrower
  4.  Bolt gun

As the game progresses the weapons get more powerful but the alien cannot be killed so it’s important to lay low at all times.

On Steam the early buyers were generally happy with the game, citing the artwork and soundtrack as excellent. This game, unlike earlier recent Alien releases from Sega,  can take from 16 to 30 hours to complete.

The game features Steamworks and has achievements.
