Anthem box-artAnthem was February 22, 2019 by Electronic Arts. The game was developed by Bioware. Anthem is a third person action game.

Anthem combines third-person shooter and action role-playing game elements in a “contiguous open world” shared with up to three other players in which they take the role of a Freelancer donning fully customizable exosuits called Javelins.

Team with up to three other players in cooperative adventures that reward both combined effort and individual skill. Each player’s choice of javelin exosuit will shape their contribution and strategic role.

As you explore, you will discover a gripping story filled with unique and memorable characters. Seamless and intelligent matchmaking will ensure you can quickly and easily find other players to adventure alongside.

One combo is freezing enemies (a bit like in Alien Swarm) and then then a lightning-strike detonator that sets up a combo that hits for bigger damage. This is new combat system with Frostbite based games. There are other combo gameplay techniques that will take time to learn and use effectively.

Halo had some vertical mechanics with the Banshee and now more games are starting to use it effectively. Anthem is quite large, and you also have to take into account that it has enormous vertical space as well to account for the game’s flying mechanics. The flight mechanics give the game a lot of exploration opportunities.

The crafting system is par for role playing games. Anthem uses a couple of screens to manage items found.

The story is not what we would expect from Bioware who has a reputation for better quality games. Bioware focuses more character and relationships which lend itself to the role playing genre oh so well. Given the game is socially focused this is why we bring it up at all.

The console versions seem to work well but the PC version needs some serious gameplay repair. EA has admitted its not a PC focused game. The long load screens are another gripe.

At its core, the game is playable but with all the hyperbole we believe EA raised expectations a bit more than warranted.
