Defiance was released on June 4, 2016 by Trion Worlds who also developed the game. Defiance is a mass third person shooter.
Defiance is an open world action shooter that ties in with the TV show. There is also a hunt to find alien technology.
Characters come from one of four Origins: Veterans, Outlaws, Machinists, or Survivalists.
Players can choose to be either a Human or an “Irathient” (a humanoid alien species who are similar to humans), or the Castithan race if you have a particular DLC available.
The gunplay is very good. In fact, though we haven’t played them all, combat in Defiance is on of the best of all MMOs. Though it is third-person, it has the feeling of a FPS, which we love so dear. All the classes are the same, there is no role-playing factor to Defiance at all. Swords don’t matter, they are just fun for a while. Vehicles don’t really matter, since they are almost all the same. A lot of guns, likewise.
It has been reported that Trion spend about $70 million developing Defiance. The game has been under development since 2008.
The game is being distributed as free to play, but realistically free player are severely disadvantaged. Players will soon have millions of clams that cannot used on anything. However, the one useful currency, used to upgrade guns (arkforge) has become rare as hen’s teeth, almost impossible to grind, so players need to buy it with cash money. In short, Defiance is a pay to win game.
DLC for Defiance totals over $400
