ERROR CODE 0x800704DF

If you ever run across error code 0x800704DF, it usually indicates a problem with one or more of the Windows system components.

SYSTEM FILE CHECKER

Open an elevated command prompt and run:

sfc /scannow

This tool will take several minutes to complete, it will make sure all of the Windows components are OK and not damaged.

CHKDSK

Open an elevated command prompt and run:

chkdsk /r

This will take many hours as wll check that storage for any unrecoverable errors. Very high capacity disks may take longer to check completely. Its best to run this overnight so that the media check will be done.

DISM

Another tool that sometimes can help is the Deployment Imaging and Servicing Management (DISM) which will need an elevated command prompt to use. The run these command to attempt to fix Windows updates etc.

STEP 1

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

STEP 2

DISM /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

STEP 3

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Once these steps are done, reboot the machine. Then, run Windows update after the machine has been rebooted.

NB: DISM may appear to be stuck at 20.0% but the program will eventually finish.

WINDOWS 8.1

Windows 8 has a new feature call refresh Windows, which can preserve libraries including Documents, Pictures and Videos. Windows, drivers and games will need to be installed fresh. An NVIDIA driver problem lead us to use this feature successfully. Even the download folder is preserved so installing divers etc. is fast.

WINDOWS 10

Windows 10 adds a new capability to download updates from other machines.Sharing updates reduces the need to download updates repeatedly. Phones and tablets can be connected with the mobile network but generally this is more costly. When connected to a Wi-Fi, mobile machines can grab updates from the internet or other machines depending on availability. This is the idea of having multiple network connections with metered and unmetered settings.

Our netbook has 3 network adapters, the conventional Ethernet, a wireless-n Wi-Fi adapter and a GSM cellular adapter. Installing updates over the cellular network is  expensive and coffee shops almost universally have Wi-Fi installed. Tablet machines are provisioned with a rich array of wireless options and the lower power consumption is very desirable.
