File History is the new Backup solution that comes with Windows 8 and above. File history can now transparently backup Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos, and Desktop folders and the OneDrive files.as well.
Beware that File History can use a fair amount of storage so its not a bad idea to have a larger capacity disk to use. If you have a large music or video, they need a lot of backup space. A good guide is to have 50% to 100% addition capacity for backups.
To activate it, go Settings -> Update and Security -> Backup and simply select the desired backup disk. File History uses a network drive or USB attached disk.
Desktop machines can use a second hard disk, network attached storage or a USB driver as desired. Windows will create a folder called File History on the disk and then it will use that to make a permanent backup of your personal files. File history can add custom folders if desired.
The first time around the File History may take a few hours to make a full backup. It depends in the performance of the network and the storage device etc.
Once the initial backup is complete then the workload is much lower as documents etc tend to be static and do not change much.
By default File History will make permanent backups of files so you can go back to previous versions as desired. By default File History will backup every hour. These can be changed if desired. By maintaining history of files, any damaged files can be recovered quickly.
To prevent File History from overwhelming storage with game backups, there is an option to free space as needed. This is the motivation for a larger capacity backup system so that FIle History can be ignored once it is configured..
File history can work with Origin Games to backup most of their games. Open More Options and then you can add the game folder.
Add: C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games
Depending on how many games you own you may need more than 1TB extra backup capacity. If you restore Origin Games from a Reset Windows, Origin will use games it finds in the folder and install them saving on download bandwidth. Origin does not update games as often as Steam so the overhead for backups is much lower.
File History can backup Steam but beware that game updates will increase the backup workload considerably.
Add C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common
Depending on the number of games installed this may need 50% more space than the size of the game library.
NEW BACKUP DISK
File history can be stopped and a new disk can be used. The old backup is not erased. The process can be repeated as new storage is purchased. NAS boxes are low cost and they have 2 or more hard disks. These are excellent for File History as they can be populated with high capacity hard disks. NAS boxes are designed to be connected directly to the Wi-Fi box with Ethernet cable. Wi-Fi is slower but its an options for laptop users.
Samsung has a 4TB SSD so having a 6TB hard disk for file history makes perfect sense. Larger capacity SSD drives will need multiple disk NAS units to be able to support the full capacity of the SSD.
