GameSpy_-_Official_LogoGamespy was founded back in 1996 They were the service provider for game companies who wanted to provide multiplayer capabilities for their games. EA and other game publishers found GameSpy and PunkBuster both to be very useful.

idSoftware used GameSpy for Quake which was one of the first games to offer internet multiplayer capability. GameSpy emerged from the need to find game servers.

GameSpy was merged with IGN in 2004.  Unfortunately GameSpy closed on February 13, 2013.  This mean that scores of games that used them would no longer function. GameSpy posted a goodbye on their site before closing for good. Over a dozen people lost their jobs.

EA simply elected to terminate multiplayer capability instead of modifying the games to use swarms of personal machines as servers the way Steam handles it.

Many developers have now moved to Steam. Some games can now be activated with Steam eliminating disk checks etc.

Steamworks has multiplayer capability so its being integrated into a few titles but most have simply abandoned their old games completely.
