heifOne of the new features that will be added to the next version of Windows 10 is called the High Efficiency Image Format (HEIF, ISO/IEC 23008-12). It comes from the JPEG group. This  new standard uses some of the capabilities from the HEVC.

The new  ISO Base Media File Format (ISO/IEC 14496-12) abandons the old TIFF style format in favor of a new one that can handle more functionality such as transparency and other important capabilities.

The format also adds multiple frames capability similar to the way animated GIF images work. It also expands on the EXIF amendments to handle modern cameras and mobile phones.

Computational photography forms a new category of use cases that can benefit from the HEIF file format. Now a set of related images can be stored in a single file with associated metadata indicating relationships between different pictures.

See the detailed specs here.

We expect that this capability will become widely used over the coming few years as new devices come to market.
