Hardcore gamers can rejoice with the new SSD7210 with its 4 juicy U.2 ports. While U.2 drives are still a tad expensive, this card can support up to 4 drives to handle even the largest game collection. With 4 lanes per drive this card can deliver over 35 GB per second of bandwidth.
Recently Samsung released new 30TB SSD drives but they are not yet available with U.2 ports. Now that lower cost NVMe cards like the SSD7210 are available, we can see the demand for U.2 SSD products to increase rapidly.
Unlike onboard DMI 3.0 based NVMe solutions, which are forced to share a single PCIe 3.0 x4 lane with the motherboard SATA & USB ports, the SSD7120 features dedicated PCIe 3.0 x16 bus bandwidth, which allows each SSD to interface directly with the platform’s CPU.
The SSD7210 controllers are fully independent NVMe RAID solutions, and are not tethered to specific motherboards or chipset families; any system sporting a free PCIe 3.0 x16 slot with direct access to the CPU.
Right now there are few U.2 SSD drives available. This will change now that U.2 ports are appearing on motherboards which will give more motivation to provide faster products. U.2 is double the bandwidth of M.2 and the High Point SSD7210 shows that a controller can achieve insane speeds.
