Intel has released its Kaby Lake a few weeks late for the 2016 holiday season. Still they had to be sure the hardware was validated and yields adequate before they could launch them.
No real surprise for desktop users. Three i7 parts with four cores and hyperthreading, one of which is unlocked and one is low power, followed by a few i5 quad-core parts that have the same trend of unlock and low power, as well as some dual-core with hyperthreading i3 parts.
The most obvious advantage of Kaby Lake is the faster clock speeds. The performance of the seventh generation chips is improved by roughly 12% for applications and roughly 19% for Internet use compared with the sixth generation chips.
At the same clock speeds Kaby Lake is the same for performance as Skylake but they can run at higher clock speeds.
Kaby Lake also provides support with the Z270 boards for the Optane phase change memory that Intel is now finally commercializing.
Intel offers hardware for a wide range of uses. Gaming enthusiasts will focus on the S series which is what we are reviewing.
There is a new unlocked i3-7350K. Previously Intel only offered unlocked i5 and i7 processors. This CPU will likely not be as popular as the i5 or i7 for overclocking however there is definitely a market segment.
Intel does offer Xeon processors for LGA1151 however they make up a smaller segment of the market compared to the i3 and i5 market segments.
All Kaby Lake S processors have the Intel 630 integrated graphics. The 630 graphics support 3820×2160 resolution.
