headerWolfenstein: The New Order was released May 20, 2014 by Bethesda. The game was developed by Machine Games.  Wolfenstein: The New Order is a conventional first person shooter action game.

We tried to purchase the disk version of Wolfenstein: New Order from EB Games, where it was offered on 9/3/2014 at approximately 10:30 AM for $39.99. The store downtown in Victoria, BC had 2 packages on their display for PC games, but the clerk had no copies left. EB games keeps disks locked up as a security measure against shoplifting. He called another store where we went to buy the game, but it was priced at $69.99. That is clear bait and switch and its illegal in Canada under section 74.04 of the Competition Act which covers deceptive retail practices.

Evil minds have created the ultimate terror and only you can stop them in Wolfenstein: The New Order, a re-imagining of the classic FPS franchise. The original Wolfenstein introduced the whole genre of a shooter.

This game is rather more demanding than the the 2010 reboot of Wolfenstein. That game used a modified version of the id Tech 4 engine.

Now 5 years later you get intense, cinematic and rendered in stunning detail with id Software’s id new Tech 5 engine. Wolfenstein sends players across Europe on a personal mission to bring down the Nazi war machine. With the help of a small group of resistance fighters, infiltrate their most heavily guarded facilities, battle high-tech Nazi legions, and take control of super-weapons that have conquered the earth and beyond.

In Germany, an alternate version of the game will be released in which there are no references to national-socialist ideology or the Nazi regime (which is simply called The Regime). Moreover, all swastikas will be replaced by the Wolfenstein logo and wolves heads, and Nazi ranks replaced by triangles and numbers.

The game follows a standard first-person shooter formula with the player taking on enemies over the course of a level.

The New Order utilizes a health system in which the player’s health is divided into separate sections that regenerate; if an entire section is lost, the player must use a health pack to replenish the missing health.

The player also has access to a non-limited weapon inventory, dual wielding certain weapons, as well as the ability to lean around, over and under cover, and perform a combat slide. Stealth is not this game’s strongest feature but it does add to the game play.

We have seen several games offer dual wield weapons from Halo 2 for Windows Vista onwards. Clearly a lot work went into improving the gameplay.

Certain weapons also have special abilities such as a laser cannon which transforms into a cutting tool, and some turrets can be pulled from their stationary position and carried around. Semi-destructible environments are now featured. Over time games have greatly worked hard to make the play more interesting.

This time around the game takes place during the 1960s in a world in which the Third Reich won World War II. The player assumes the role of series protagonist William “B.J.” Blazkowicz who is tasked with launching an “impossible” counter-offensive against the Nazi powers that have taken over the world.

Set in Europe, The New Order will have players infiltrating Nazi strongholds and battling legions of enemies, while taking control of “super weapons” that the Nazi Regime has used to dominate Earth.

Another rival review was rather focused on the horrors that Hitler is responsible for, rather than this fiction of this story. We see this game as a change of pace from shooting zombies etc.

The campaign is much better than many of late. We estimate the game will take 20-25 hours the first time trough. The game has good replay with alternate strategies and even a different time line. Shooters generally are fairly heavily scripted which has been the way since the genre emerged in the coin-op arcades decades ago.

Wolfenstein: The New Order has some modicum of a destructive environment to compete with the Frostbite engine used by EA. Its clear that a lot of development has gone into this game making it solid AAA title for 2014.

The game works best with a single high end video card. Game needs a very fast X4 CPU as well as at least 8GB of memory. The idTech 5 engine does not support SLI.
